Best of SIUC:
Choosing to make SIUC both my personal and professional home has been one of the single most rewarding decisions I could ever make. From state of the art equipment, a trip to Scotland, and those life-long friendships it all adds up to my 100% unique Southern experience. Like so many, I came just wanting an education. I left a Saluki for life.
Advice for choosing a college:
Knowledge is power. The more knowledge you have the more informed of a decision you can make. So come campus, see your classrooms, walk your halls, talk to a professor or two, go to a game. You can then choose your college with complete confidence, knowing that you are making the very best decision for YOU! |

Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bachelor of Science, University Studies with a minor in Psychology, 1998
Hobbies:

Best of SIUC:
The fact that SIUC is a comprehensive research extensive university with
over 200 degree options creates opportunity for a very diverse campus. The various cultures and ethnic groups, the various political and religious backgrounds, and the differing interests of our society makes for a realistic environment of what "our" world is today. Exercise an open mind, grow from your experiences, and never compromise what you know to be good and true.
Advice for choosing a college:
1. Find your passion. 2. Appraise your academic strengths and weaknesses. 3. Visit your schools and satisfy what is important to you, i.e., beauty of campus, distance from home, safety, affordability. Choose based on fair assessments of each, then surmount an unconquerable will in achieving your goals. |

Education:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bachelor of Science, Speech-Public Relations, 1981
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bachelor of Science, Workforce Education/Development, 1997
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Master of Science, Education, 2005
Hobbies:
When you have an 11 year old daughter busy with the school band, swing choir, and Irish dance there is not much time to pursue a hobby. Most of my free time is consumed by my duties as President of the Board of Education of my local school district.
Best of SIUC:
I was first attracted to SIU by their top flight Zoology program but also by the setting. The rolling hills and bluffs of the Shawnee National Forest blanket the region. If you are active and like a change of scenery, this is the place to be.
Advice for choosing a college:
A real temptation is to choose a college because your friends are going there or because it is close to home or because you saw one of their sports teams on ESPN. Take the time to find out what is best for you and all of the relevant factors such as: programs of study, internships, research opportunities, cost, study abroad, facilities, student life, the campus, town, and surrounding area. If you do, you diminish the risk of missing out. |

Education:
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bachelor of Science, Business Management, 2001
Hobbies:
volleyball, softball, shuffleboard, trivia, card games, board games, movies, college basketball (especially Saluki basketball!), traveling with friends, photography
Best of SIUC:
I have so many great memories from my time at SIU. My fondest memories are revolved around attending athletic events with all my friends. I love college basketball so watching our Salukis is always a great time. The game against Indiana University when Bruce Weber was coaching stands out the most. Before the game, there were pyrotechnics and a light show. Indiana was overwhelmed from the beginning. After the game, IU's coach said he knew he was in trouble from the start.
Advice for choosing a college:
Visit the schools you're interested in. It's not always about who's giving you the most money or what you've "heard" about the school. Please take the time to make a first-hand decision. It's a huge, expensive, life-changing decision. Plan ahead and start early. The more informed and knowledgeable you are ahead of time, the better your university experience will be. Waiting until the last minute only complicates things and makes it more of a stressful situation for you. Another thing is to be involved with something other than just your coursework. Join any of our 400+ clubs or organizations, get a campus job, play intramural sports, join the band, etc. Staying involved not only helps you develop as a student and person, but it's a great resume builder as well. |

working on my house, traveling, spending time with friends and family, shopping, crafts
Best of SIUC:
I have great memories of spending summers at lake Kincaid at the spillway or on a boat laying out and barbecuing. The natural beauty on campus and in the area of Carbondale is hard to beat.
Advice for choosing a college:
Visit campus. It's the best way to see if a school is the right fit for you. |

West Central Illinois
Email: MattT24@siu.edu
Education: Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bachelor of Arts, Economics with a minor in Political Science, 2003
Hobbies: Scuba diving, travel, photography, spending time with my Golden Retriever
Best of SIUC: When I think of my time as a student, my fondest memories are of all the great people I met at Southern. The people I consider to be my closest and best friends were my peers at Southern. My friends and I now live in different parts of the country, but from Chicago to Carbondale to Atlanta, our successes are all thanks to the opportunities we found at Southern.
Advice for choosing a college: The college search process is a series of steps. Take each step one at a time and do not let the process overwhelm you. Research your choices, make your college visits, and discuss your options with your family. It is becoming more and more critical to apply early so set deadlines for each step in the process and stick to them. Finally, when in doubt, ask. If you have questions, remember that you are not alone. You can always turn to the admissions counseling staff here at Southern or your high school guidance counselor. |
